This Spring I had the opportunity to attend the Bayside Workshop with Krista Jones and Natalie Franke in Queenstown, Maryland. While at the two-day conference, all of the attendees photographed an Eastern Shore anniversary session the ladies had styled, and we even got to practice with Krista and Davey’s Contax film camera! I fell head over heels in love with the creamy pastel images her camera produced, and I can’t wait to save up for a film camera of my own. My next blog post will include a few of those photos, so stay tuned.

The workshop took place across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge at the Wye River Conference Center and we placed most of our subject in front of rows and rows of cherry blossom trees. The timing of this workshop was perfect because of the unique backdrop all of our styled sessions had. Also, the Kruse and Vieira Events picnic basket was one of my favorite details.

The sun gave a warm look to the photographs and the couple was backlit nicely!

I can’t begin to explain how grateful I am for all of the friendships made at this workshop, and for Natalie and Krista’s guidance and expertise when it comes to running a successful wedding photography business. Their knowledge of photography — from posing to workflow, advertisement and working with other vendors — has helped me immensely and has given me that extra push I’ve needed for the past year. Yay for extra motivation!

Starting your own business is both emotionally draining and fulfilling at the same time, and building relationships with others entrepreneurs has proven helpful time and time again. Being able to share losses, wins, and having other photographers to lean on is invaluable.

I decided to rent a natural light studio in Northern Virginia last month for an intimate photography session with one of my 2015 brides before her Leesburg wedding at the beautiful Raspberry Plain plantation. We determined that the weekend before her big day would be the perfect time to try on her recently fitted wedding dress, and we even made time to switch gears and capture some boudoir shots for her husband-to-be. Liz completely killed the shoot and I couldn’t have been more excited about the gorgeous SnapSpace Studios wood floors! (because that always makes the photo, right?)

The afternoon light filtering through the curtains created a beautiful glow on Liz, and I also loved how it reflected off of her ivory wedding dress in most of these photographs. I hope she cherishes her bridal photos for years to come.

After photographing families, seniors, babies, and couples this past year, I quickly realized that my passion lies with engagement and wedding photography. I had the opportunity to work with wonderful couples who were married in Alexandria, Berryville, and Baltimore, and along the way, I fell in love with the entire process. From capturing all of the unique details the bride and groom put their blood, sweat, and tears into, to snapping sentimental family moments during the ceremony, and stolen glances between the newly married duo during the reception, wedding photography is what makes me feel energized and excited. Therefore, I will be focusing on photographing all things “romantic” from now on and I couldn’t be happier about this decision.

Voyage Photography Rebrand

As soon as I had this revelation, I had an itch to rebrand my logo, website, and blog. I craved something simple, organic, and glamorous, but with editorial elements and I had no idea how to achieve this look myself. After researching plenty of website designers and not feeling blown away by any of them, I contacted GO LIVE HQ for a full rehaul of my photography brand. With the guidance of a Pinterest board and a couple of questionnaires, they took my jumbled ideas and created a timeless look. The process was intense, but I went live in no time and the finished product is perfect.

Here’s a look at my Voyage Photography brand board from GO LIVE HQ:

Go Live HQ Brand Board

A big thanks to my wonderful designer and GO LIVE HQ for making this rebrand possible. By the way, I will still be offering lifestyle and portrait photography but on a limited basis. I’d also love to jump into styled boudoir sessions!
